Whitchurch Local Attractions and Things To Do
Whitchurch Heritage Centre
Artefacts left behind by the Romans can be seen here, along with other items which help us piece together the long history of Whitchurch. The neighbouring Craft Centre offers the opportunity to see items being made by local craftspeople.
Out of Town Trails
Jubilee Park is an excellent starting point if you want to walk or cycle along beautiful, long distance walks. The Shropshire Way is one of 5 paths which you could choose here, and this option takes you to The Llangollen Canal and the spectacular flight of staircase locks at Grindley Brook.
Town Trails
The Clock Trail and the Children's Town Mouse Trail are excellent ways to discover the town centre and learn a bit of history as you go along. The trails will guide you through the wide range of medieval, Victorian and Georgian buildings, as well as the town's fabulous selection of clocks. Buildings of notes include the 16th century structure which has housed the Bull's Head pub for the last couple of centuries. On the other side of the road there is the Old Eagles pub, which has been functioning for almost as long.
Farmer's Market
As Whitchurch is a renowned market town you can expect a wide selection of goods on offer here every Friday. The town is regarded by many as being the home of Cheshire cheese, despite not being in Cheshire, and you will find locally produced cheese easily available.
Brown Moss Nature Reserve
Over 200 types of plants thrive in this former peat bog, which includes woodlands, heathland and marshes.
Hawkstone Park
Located on the road to Shrewsbury, this 18th century version of a fun park includes hidden paths, secret tunnels and bridges. Names such as Gingerbread Hall, the Red Castle and the Serperntine Tunnel give an idea of the family oriented fun which is on offer here.
Whitchurch Boat Rally
This annual event gives local boat owners the chance to dress up their boats. Held in September on the Whitchurch arm of the Llangollen Canal, there are events like dog shows, a floating cheese shop and a Victorian fancy dress competition.
Whitchurch Leisure Centre
As well the variety of sports activities which you would expect from a modern sports centre, there are also cinema screenings and theatre productions on offer here.
Battle of Blore Heath
Every September near-by Market Drayton hosts a re-enactment of this famous War of the Roses battle. The re-enactment has taken place annually since 1998 and while improvement work on the designated battle area means that there will be no re-enactment in 2010 it is hoped that this will just be a one-off.
